Kalgoorlie Mines

Normally more famous for its gold deposits and skimpy bars, Kalgoorlie and the surrounding countryside is peppered with abandoned mine sites, many of which are now flooded.
The attraction to these sites lay not in the open pits but in the Portals ? the tunnels bored into the rock so that men and equipment could access the ore and dump trucks could remove it. Finding Portals is not easy in the large open pits, but there has been some success by the Perth cave diving group The PACK Rats . . . . and the tunnels are deep !

The Mt. Charlotte mine is still in operation close to Kalgoorlie?s town centre and reputedly has flooded disused sections with many kilometres of horizontal passages (Portals) and Stopes (massive rooms the size of football fields where the ore body has been removed).

Check out the few sites noted here, there are lots more and they will be added as they are dived.
