New Ireland

New Ireland Province is gained after a 90 minute flight from Port Moresby with Air Nuigini airlines. Don’t be scared by the wreckage of planes at the approaches to the runway, the landings I experienced during my recent trip were amongst the best controlled I’ve seen.
The Province played a significant role during WW2 as a sheltered port for Japanese following their invasion in 1942.

The economy of the region is largely subsistance farming, with copra and date plantations providing the bulk of the cash inflow to the region. For reasons that will become obvious to the first-time visitor to the area, tourism is rapidly gaining in popularity.
